Five Questions: Darien’s Jack Massey

Jack Massey has high hopes this year for the Darien hockey team.

It has been five years since Darien last won the FCIAC boys hockey title and four since its most recent state championship. That could change this year; the Blue Wave have a deep lineup and is off to a 3-1 start.

Helping to lead the way is senior defenseman Jack Massey, one of the Blue Wave’s captains.

TRR: What are your goals for this season?

JM: I think our one and only goal should be to win the state championship. Obviously the FCIACs are great and would be a great accomplishment, but we are really looking at the state championship as our only award to win this season.

TRR: What will it take for the team to win FCIAC and state titles?

JM: It’s going to take a large group effort. We have to have a lot of depth this season. We’ve got to play some great defense. We’ve got a great goalie and we have got a great offense, but we have got to put some more goals in and start shoving down on defense.

TRR: Is there any advice from your coach that has resonated with you?

JM: Yeah definitely, he always wants us to play gritty and physical. He wants us to go out there and make sure that it’s a hard game for the other team to play. Really, when you make it hard for the other team that’s when you can win.

TRR: What is your New Year’s resolution?

JM: Well, it’s my last season so it’s probably to win the state championship this year, that’s all I really want.

TRR: Which team do you want to win the Super Bowl?

JM: I am a Jets fan. I was rooting for the Saints; they lost unfortunately. So I am probably onto the Ravens. I like them a lot and what they are doing.
