Angelo Formisano has had a close relationship with Mariano Rivera for nearly two decades, when Formisano was working in the garment industry and Rivera was starting out on a career with the New York Yankees that would lead to becoming major league baseball’s all-time leader in saves.
Formisano said he helped Rivera’s transition to living in the New York area.
“I was working in retail clothing and our paths crossed,” Formisano said. “He was young and looking for someone to help guide him. I had a contact with the Yankees. I didn’t know we would become friends and it just blossomed.”
Formisano, a former softball coach at Ridgefield High School, is now the stadium director, and on Dec. 10 Rivera will be making his fifth appearance at the school for a special fundraiser.
“A Night With The Best Closer Ever” will run from 6-8 p.m. in the Ridgefield High School student center, with the proceeds benefiting both Rivera’s church, Refugio de Esperanza, as well as Tiger Hollow Inc., to help fund the lights for Ridgefield’s new Tiger Hollow II, which will be known as Guido Maiolo Field.
The event will be limited to 300 people. The cost is $100 a ticket, which will include a commemorative shirt and door prizes. There will also be a silent auction.
Formisano said the idea is to make the night intimate, so guests will have a chance to interact with Rivera.
“This is the third time he’s done a fundraiser here,” Formisano said. “We wanted this to be a smaller event so he can work the room.”
