By the end of last season, Greenwich had as potent an offense as any team in the FCIAC. The Cardinals averaged over 45 points a game in winning seven of their final eight, including the last five in a row. If not for a 1-2 start and a defense that struggled, they would have been a team no one would have wanted to face in the postseason.
The biggest reason for the explosiveness, of course, was all-purpose back Austin Longi. The junior finished with 2,881 total yards and 33 touchdowns. He rushed for 1,595 yards but was a threat anytime he touched the ball, anywhere on the field, including kickoff and punt returns.
If you want to pick a preseason player of the year, the 5-8 back, who is also one of the leaders of Greenwich’s secondary, is in the conversation. He is a big reason the Cardinals have created perhaps the biggest buzz this offseason.
Longi was offered by Colgate on Friday and already has an offer from Rhode Island. Longi said he plans to visit a few more summer camps before making a final decision.
We caught up with Longi on Friday at the New Canaan Grip It & Rip It tournament to discuss the Cardinals’ past, present and future, and what we can expect this season.
