Fun Facts, where we find out more about FCIAC athletes, was a regular feature on The Ruden Report Overtime newsletter. Until we start publishing the newsletter again, we are going to move it here to the site.)
A new Fun Facts with Maya Reiner of the Staples field hockey team.
— What are some game day traditions? Before every game, during the huddle, we always kiss and wave before running on the field. Also, a lot of girls on the team put two small braids in their hair as their game day hairstyle. This year and previous years as well, the captains make bracelets or another piece of fun jewelry that we wear on game days.
— What is your favorite restaurant in Westport and what do you get? There are so many good ones, but I would have to say my favorite restaurant in Westport is Pink Sumo. I always get rock shrimp and udon noodles with steak.
— What are you most excited about attending Amherst? I am so excited to be able to be part of such an amazing team and challenge myself academically at Amherst. I think it will be a great mix, and I can’t wait for the next four years there with my team and at the school.
— How does the team feel about not being able to compete for a fifth straight state championship? It was honestly really upsetting to not be able to have the opportunity to compete in a state tournament. It’s always a competitive and fun time, so we are definitely bummed about that. However, we are just lucky we are able to get some sort of season in. So many teams aren’t having field hockey this season, so we feel very fortunate. We still have a solid regular season and a postseason that is a bit different. We have been loving the season, and we can’t wait for the rest.
— What are your goals for this year? Our goals for this year are to win every game possible and win the postseason tournament. We are giving it all we have for every game that comes our way, and we want to show all other teams what Staples field hockey is about.
— What is your favorite activity besides field hockey? I just love hanging out with my family and friends. Whether it’s going out to dinner or going on a nice beach walk, I always love it when I’m with my family and friends.
— After a win where do you go celebrate with your teammates? My team is a big fan of Angelina’s. We love all of their food, from their breadsticks to their penne alla vodka. It’s a great postgame restaurant.
