Girls Lacrosse Preview: Wilton Leads The Pack Looking To End Darien’s Run

The usual suspects will again be the major players this FCIAC girls lacrosse season. The Blue Wave are the team to beat until someone proves otherwise, and Wilton may be in the position to prove otherwise. New Canaan and Greenwich remain solid and hope to be the schools to end Darien’s recent dominance.

The Favorite

Darien. With streaks of six league and five state titles, it would be foolish to pick against the Blue Wave until someone knocks them off. They lost a lot of talent, have a strong nucleus back as well as some inexperienced players who have waited their turns to get increased roles. It is a continuing cycle. With Emma Jaques at midfield and Christine Fiore on the attack, coach Lisa Lindley again has two dominant forces. The offense will be potent, with Ashley Humphrey ready to break out, while Jacques is the anchor of a strong unit that includes Katie Ramsey and Nicole Humphrey. There are new faces on defense, but Darien is poised to keep its run going.

The Contenders

Wilton. The Warriors have spent the offseason thinking about last year’s Class L final, when they rallied from a 10-4 halftime deficit against Darien to get within 12-10 late before suffering a 13-10 setback. That memory and the cast of returning players is the reason for Wilton’s hopeful optimism. Paisley Eagan has transferred back to take over at midfield, Eva Greco returns on attack and the Warriors have not one but two top caliber goalies in Paige Brown and Bridgette Wall. Midfielder Julia Bonnist scored three goals in the loss to Darien and there are no areas of weakness for this hungry team.

New Canaan. Last year ended a run of five straight Class M final appearances by the Rams, and many of their best players return to make the chase for a third title in four years. Gianana Bruno and Braeden Dial are strong scorers, while the midfield will be under the careful watch of Karlie Bucci and Julia Ozimek. If the defense can match up against the dominant attacks it will see, the Rams will assume their customary positions in the league and state hunts.

Greenwich. Kaitlin Gaghan takes over as coach of a loaded lineup built for instant success. She will boast one of the state’s best midfields, with Genevieve DeWinter, Maggie O’Gorman and Paige Finneran. Sloane Loveless continues a tradition of outstanding goalkeepers the Cardinals have produced. Greenwich was the last team before Darien to win the Class L title, and the personnel is capable of now trying to end that run.

The Sleeper

Ridgefield. The Tigers graduated four of their five players that earned first or second team All-FCIAC honors, but the one back is the most dangerous: Caroline Curnal on attack. The team has a number of top athletes, including sophomore Caitlin Slaminko, who was instrumental in the school’s girls soccer team winning its first state title. The defense should be a strength, with Lexi Held back in goal.
