The regular season is just 27 percent old. So of course it is time to take the public temperature and ask: Which is the FCIAC football team to beat.
There is a long way to go and, bless the schedule-makers, seemingly a big game every weekend as many of the top teams face each other.
New Canaan and St. Joseph are considered 1-2, respectively, at this point. The Rams have steamrolled past three opponents; St. Joseph over two, then found a way to avoid defeat on a final-play bomb against Fairfield Prep.
The two teams meet in 33 days.
Is Darien in the mix? So far, so good, but we will learn more Saturday afternoon when it travels to St. Joseph. Everyone has written off Staples, but it will be favored in every remaining regular season game except for New Canaan, and figures to get better as the leaves start falling.
Do you believe 3-0 Brien McMahon has the right stuff, or that Ridgefield can bounce back from a beating Saturday at St. Joseph? Believe in 2-0 Trumbull?
Interestingly, in the current point standings that determine the two league championship game finalists, New Canaan and Darien are the lowest ranked of the six remaining unbeaten teams.
We are giving you five options: Darien, New Canaan, St. Joseph and Staples and an Other category, if you like someone else. Feel free to add a comment explaining your pick or making your own early-season observation.
The poll closes Friday at noon.
