If you put your money on Darien winning the FCIAC volleyball title over the last 20 years, you made a hefty profit. The Blue Wave has run the table every year, except for 2000. Last season, because no final was played because of Superstorm Sandy, Darien shared the championship with Fairfield Ludlowe.
But the conference volleyball picture was shaken up last week when the Blue Wave lost consecutive matches to Greenwich and Staples. Then the unbeaten Cardinals lost to Ludlowe on Wednesday. Staples dropped a 3-2 decision to Greenwich and plays Ludlowe next Wednesday.
Ridgefield and Fairfield Warde each have three losses but would be considered sleepers.
The FCIAC Tournament, which begins on Oct. 28, will be as wide open as anytime in recent memory. Darien is strong enough to add to the trophy case, but Greenwich, Ludlowe and Staples have demonstrated the ability to end the Blue Wave’s reign.
Which begs the question, which team do you think is going to win the FCIAC volleyball title? We will give you the choice of the current four favorites, or you can select the “other” category if you believe another school is going to pull a surprise. Please add a comment to explain your selection.
The poll will remain open until noon on Sunday.
