For the past three days, rumors have swirled that Darien star defensive lineman George Reed had sustained a serious knee injury a week ago against North Haven that would sideline him for next Thursday’s FCIAC championship game, and perhaps beyond.

Blue Wave coach Rob Trifone addressed the situation on Saturday afternoon.

“George hurt his knee against North Haven and he has yet to practice,” Trifone said. “He has been cleared to play and right now we expect him to be in uniform for the game.”

Reed was hurt in the third quarter of last Saturday’s 31-0 win over North Haven. He left the field and did not return.

Reed has been an anchor to one of the state’s best defensive lines. He has 8.5 sacks and 79 tackles — 14 for losses.

Used in short-yardage situations, Reed also has scored seven touchdowns on just 16 carries.

Reed gave a verbal commitment last week to play next year at Division III Union College.
