Weekend Game Plan: Extra Day And Three Matchups Between Playoff Contenders

Dave Ruden

Right now eight FCIAC teams would make the state playoffs if the season ended last weekend. Six of those teams play each other in what is an extended weekend with a big game each day. Greenwich, New Canaan and St. Joseph come in as the favorites but few would be surprised if one or two of them took a tumble.

Game Of The Week

Trumbull (4-1) at Greenwich (4-1), Today, 7 p.m. Thursday night football comes to the FCIAC and this should be much better than what you’ve been watching on Amazon the last few weeks. The Cardinals are a stopped two-point conversion away from being unbeaten and No. 1 in the state. To get back there they must cut down on the penalties and mistakes. The talent is there. Their defense will try to stop state touchdown leader Rowan Johnston, who has found the end zone 21 times for the Eagles. These teams have many of the same attributes so the guess here is the winner will be the one that makes the fewest errors.

Tomorrow

New Canaan (5-0) at Wilton (4-1), 7 p.m. The Rams gave up three touchdowns and had three shutouts the first half of the season. They also remember last year’s loss to Wilton, which is in the middle of a difficult-three week stretch.

Darien (3-2) at Fairfield Ludlowe (3-2), 7 p.m. The Blue Wave saved their season last week against Wilton. It has no room for error in order to return to the state playoffs and with Greenwich next week and New Canaan on the horizon can’t afford a slip up. Can the Falcons pull off a win here?

Brien McMahon (1-4) at Fairfield Warde (4-1), 7 p.m. The Senators try for a second straight week to get their second win against a school from Fairfield. This one, the Mustangs, are exceeding expectations and with a victory here will be a step closer to locking in a winning season.

Westhill (1-4) at Danbury (3-2), 7 p.m. The Hatters are making a run at finishing above .500. The Vikings have struggled since a season-opening win.

Bridgeport Central (0-5) at Norwalk (0-5), 7 p.m. The good news is someone is going home with their first win.

Saturday

Staples (4-1) at Stamford (2-3), 1 p.m. The Wreckers are in a good position to clinch a state playoff berth before Thanksgiving. But no looking ahead: the Black Knights are an improving team.

Ridgefield (3-2) at St. Joseph (4-1), 1:30 p.m. A really intriguing game. Do the Tigers have Class LL playoff talent? Can they sustain their play from the first quarter of the game against Greenwich? How will the Cadets rebound from their first loss? Will their lack of team depth catch up with them during the second half of the season?
