The storylines leading up to Saturday’s FCIAC Boys Basketball Tournament quarterfinal games focused on whether anyone could beat top-seeded Bridgeport Central and, in a year of parity, how many lower seeds would advance to the next round.
Well the Hilltoppers moved on — barely — defeating St. Joseph by just two points and nearly becoming the third No. 8 seed in four years to pull off a major upset.
And the other games remained true to form. The only lower seed to reach the semifinals was No. 5 Stamford, and no one would consider its 55-54 win over Westhill in the day’s best game an upset.
Central and No. 2 Greenwich will be considered strong favorites when they face, respectively, Stamford and Ridgefield in Tuesday’s semifinals. But it would be foolish to think either of the underdogs are without a chance.
Before we look ahead, there were a number of great plays in Saturday’s four games. Westhill High School student and The Ruden Report videographer Mickey Sottile captured many of them.
So as we await Tuesday’s semifinals, sit back and relive the highlights from the opening day of play.
